A Secret Tasting That Crowned the Best
The competition to choose Spain’s best Jamón Ibérico de Bellota is as serious as it gets. According to Cadena SER, the Ministry invited ham producers from all corners of Spain. Brands, labels, and logos were all removed so that the judges wouldn’t know whose ham they were tasting.
A panel of trained experts tasted each sample and judged it on four main things:
Smell – How complex and rich the aroma was
Look – Colour, marbling, and how it sliced.
Texture – How it felt in the mouth and how it broke apart
Taste – The balance of salt, nuttiness from the acorns, and overall depth
Jamones Prim came out on top of more than 60 entries, beating big names in the process. This makes the win even more impressive, proving that sometimes the best quality comes from small, quietly dedicated producers.
What Makes This Jamón Special?
Jamones Prim uses pigs that are 100% Iberian, raised in open oak forest lands where they roam freely and feed on acorns. The hams are then cured for 36 to 48 months in natural mountain air. This extended curing time adds incredible flavour and a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture that has become a signature of Spain’s finest hams.
They use a bit less salt than what’s normal, and instead rely on modern humidity-controlled rooms to keep the ham in great shape without loading it with too much sodium. It’s a nice blend of old ways and new tech.
Spain’s Reputation in the Ham World
Spain is already renowned for producing some of the finest cured hams in the world. Names like Joselito, Cinco Jotas, and BEHER are recognised around the world. BEHER’s hams have been called the best ham in the world several times at international fairs.
So, when a new name like Jamones Prim earns the highest honour in the country, it’s a clear signal that their product deserves global attention too.
More Than Just a Trophy
This win isn’t just good for Jamones Prim—it’s suitable for all of Salamanca and Spain’s food culture as a whole. It shows that even in a market filled with big brands, quality and patience still matter.
It also reminds us that the traditions of raising free-range pigs, feeding them a natural diet, and curing ham the slow way are still alive and thriving. This is food that takes years to make, but only seconds to fall in love with.
Is It the World's Best Ham?
Many people in the industry believe that if a ham is named the best in Spain, it's already among the best in the world. And it’s easy to see why. From the breed of pig to the curing method to the taste that hits every note just right, Jamones Prim’s winning ham has everything you’d want from a truly world-class product.
Whether you’re a chef, a food critic, or just someone who enjoys a slice of good cured meat, this ham is one you won’t want to miss.
