The Iberico ham world, usually calm and rooted in old traditions, has suddenly found itself in the middle of a growing storm. What began as a dispute over a simple brand name has now escalated into a much larger conflict, pitting Joselito against the DOP Jamón de Jabugo.
The ‘Jabu’ Name That Sparked Trouble
The first hit came when a commercial court in Granada ruled that the brand “Jabu” could confuse customers because it sounds too close to Jabugo, the protected designation famous for its strict standards and deep cultural heritage.
For the DOP, anything resembling their name risks misleading buyers and weakening their identity. They argue that only hams meeting their rigid rules — 100% Iberian pigs, acorn-fed, raised in the dehesa and cured traditionally — should be linked to Jabugo in any way.
Joselito disagrees strongly. They claim the “Jabu” brand has been in existence since the 1980s, long before the current DOP structure, and they acquired it legally years ago. In their view, the name has its own history and isn’t trying to “borrow” from Jabugo’s prestige. The company has appealed, and the dispute is far from over.
Another Blow: Brussels Rejects Joselito’s Health Claims
Just as the trademark battle heated up, the European Commission delivered a second blow. Joselito wanted to advertise their ham as having specific “health benefits,” like lowering oxidative stress. Brussels said no — the scientific evidence wasn’t strong enough.
Under EU law, no company can promote health claims unless they’re officially approved. As a result, Joselito must drop that entire marketing angle, making things even harder for their global image.
What Jabugo Really Wants to Protect
For the DOP Jabugo, this isn’t just a matter of legal paperwork. It’s a fight to defend a whole ecosystem — the dehesa, the oak-covered landscape where Iberian pigs graze freely on acorns. Their curing techniques have been passed down for generations, and they fear that confusing brands or relaxed rules could damage the trust and tradition they’ve built over centuries.
A Question Bigger Than Any Brand
This clash raises an essential question for the whole Iberico sector:
What holds more weight, a brand’s long history, or a protected origin with strict cultural and quality standards?
Consumers may not always see the difference, but experts insist it matters a great deal: breed, diet, curing region, and certification all shape the final flavor and deserve clear, honest labeling.
A Turbulent Future Ahead
As the courts move forward and the arguments continue, one thing is sure: the Iberico ham industry is facing one of its most turbulent and uncomfortable chapters in years. What was once a peaceful world of flavour, heritage, and slow craftsmanship has now become a fierce battle over identity, territory, and who gets to use one of the most potent names in Spanish gastronomy....LEARN MORE
